Objectives
The Soils4Liberia Project aims to improve the management and use of land and soil resources in Liberia to support sustainable agricultural production, climate resilience, and natural resource conservation. This will be achieved through strengthened policy formulation and decision-making based on reliable soil and land data generated by the project. A key focus is on building national capacity to collect, manage, and utilize soil information, ensuring long-term sustainability beyond the project’s lifespan.
To achieve this, the project will establish a Land and Soil Information System (LSIS) and support the creation of the Liberia National Soil Information Centre (LiNSIC) as a national hub for soil data and information services. The project also includes a nationwide soil and land use inventory, laboratory strengthening, and stakeholder engagement to promote the practical use of soil data through “use cases” such as crop suitability and land management planning. Capacity building is central to the project, with training provided to national institutions including the Central Agricultural Research Institute, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the University of Liberia to ensure local ownership and technical expertise.
The expected outcome is a fully functional national system that enables stakeholders to make informed decisions, improve agricultural productivity, and enhance climate resilience. However, the sustainability of these outcomes depends on continued government commitment, particularly in supporting LiNSIC, as well as strengthening national technical capacity and institutional collaboration.
